Tokoname kyusu Shirobokashi by Junzo Maekawa

Origin: Japan

Volume: 100 ml

Handmade Japanese clay teapot with ceramic strainer. Handmade in Tokoname, Japan – Maekawa Junzo.

A beautiful teapot of perfect circle and “zero saturation” colors, i.e. without a fight. It consists of a mixture of Tokoname mountain soil with Tajimi and Seto clay.

Master Junzō Maekawa was born in 1976 and grew up in Tokoname. He is the fourth generation of Maekawa ceramic masters. Founded in the early Taishō era (1912-1926), the family kiln has long specialized in the production of large ceramic items such as vases, potted plants, and traditional Japanese garden decorations. In addition to these hefty items, Junzō Maekawa has also expanded his range to include tableware and teapots, which have earned him numerous awards, including two Chouza Awards from the prestigious (National Biennial Ceramics Competition) ceramic competition held in Tokoname. Preserving ancient techniques within contemporary design, the Maekawa family is committed to making products that meet the needs and tastes of today’s people.

Tokoname-yaki is a type of Japanese pottery that traditionally comes from Tokoname in Aichi Prefecture, Japan where pottery has been made since the 12th century.

Today, Tokoname cookware is known for its legendary brick-red clay called shudei.

Master Junzō is an avid tea lover. His elegant hira-gata Tokoname-yaki kyusu (teapot) is made in a clean, modern and minimalist style. The wide, flat shape of this kyusu is specially designed for even contact between the leaves and the water, making it easy to extract umami from high-quality sencha and gyokura. The very large top opening allows an unobstructed view of the leaves, and it is also very easy to clean.

The built-in ceramic sasame filter is perfect for naturally squeezing tea, with a wide shape for faster dispensing and less clogging. Easy to use, very light and comfortable to hold. The lid adheres perfectly to the opening and has an excellent flow of water from the spout.

Keep in mind that flat kyusu requires a very gentle and slow pouring to avoid leaks around the lid. It takes a little practice to get familiar with a larger, rounder kyusu with a more raised spout.

This teapot can be used for Japanese green tea, Taiwanese Wenshan baozhong, Tie Guan Yin, or Chinese Pu erh tea. Any type of tea can be prepared in it, but since it is clay, it is necessary to opt for one type, because clay absorbs flavors.
