Japanese teapot – Kyusu Mokake Shu

Origin: Tokoname, Japan

Volume: 200 ml

Weight: about 180 g

Unglazed

The small, refined Japanese teapot Kyusu Mokake Shu shows Gyokko’s mastery of the mokaque technique – a special process of decorating with seaweed. It takes two carefully dosed firings to blend the pattern with the clay and create a unique surface. The result is a teapot that delights connoisseurs with its graceful tenderness and ability to emphasize the taste of green tea.

Master Gyokko, one of Tokoname’s most famous ceramicists, handcrafts each teapot on a potter’s wheel and equips it with an integrated ceramic strainer. It uses exclusively natural clay from Tokoname, rich in minerals and iron, which can be fired at high temperatures. It is this clay that gives the teapot its strength, longevity and ability to refine the taste of tea. With a volume of 200 ml, Mokake Shu is ideal for making tea for 1–2 people.

The advantage of natural clay

Unlike artificially mixed clay, in which iron is added in powder, Tokonamea natural clay contains iron in crystallized form. This allows baking at temperatures up to 1200 °C, resulting in greater strength and quality of the final product. Most mass-produced teapots today are made from mixed clay, but teapots made from natural Tokoname clay remain unsurpassed in durability and ability to refine the taste of tea.

Cleaning and care

  • Rinse the kettle from the outside and inside only with warm water.
  • Do not use cleaning agents.
  • If necessary, remove impurities with green tea infusion.
  • During use, the natural patina of the tea is created – it gives the teapot character and does not need to be removed.

Kyusu Mokake Shu – an artistic teapot by master Gyokka, a combination of tradition, natural clay and unique mokaque technique.
